Perforated ultra high hardness steel for appliqué super high strength armour plates

After more than twenty years during which the UK has imported armour steel for defence and civil applications, Tata Steel seeks to produce a new type of perforated armour steel in the UK.

The presentation will describe the development of hot-rolled perforated super bainitic plate steel from production trials to ballistic testing. The steel develops its properties by an austempering-type heat-treatment process, isothermal tempering. Ballistic tests show that the perforated super bainitic steel provides a strike face for an armour system that can both disrupt the flight path of a high velocity small calibre projectile and fracture its armour-piercing core. As well as toppling and shattering incoming projectiles, and redistributing their impact energy over a larger area in the process, the perforations prevent long range crack propagation.

The talk will be followed by a discussion and buffet.
